SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMISATION

The Search Engines

The Search EnginesThe big three Search Engine companies, Google, Yahoo and Windows Live (MSN) handle the majority of Search Engine traffic.

Google and Yahoo! Search are the dominant Search Engines. The following Table compares the popularity of the top Search Engines during December 2007 (Source: comScore).

Search Engine  Share
Google  58.4%
Yahoo! 22.9%
Microsoft Sites 9.8%
Time Warner Network 4.6%
Ask Network 4.3%

Getting Indexed

A Bot is a program that runs continuously, and automates Web searching. Bots are also called spiders and crawlers. They explore the World Wide Web by retrieving Web pages and following all the hyperlinks. They then generate Indexes that are accessed by the Search Engines. The Bots will eventually find and index all Website Pages. See the next page on Directory Listings on how to speed things up.

The big three have many other search engines as affiliates, so you will be also listed on more than 25 of the largest search engines.

There are two types of listings: Free and Paid. It is getting harder and harder to distinguish between the two. Paid listings are normally at the very top, or on the right hand side of a search page. Up to 85% of searchers ignore Paid listings

Spidering Websites

The frequency that Googlebot spiders a Website is closely related to how often the Website is updated. The more frequent the Website is updated, the more frequent the spidering.

The time taken for a Googlebot spidering after a Website update is also related to the frequency that the Website is updated. It is usually half the time taken between Website updates.

Checking on a Website's Listing

As Google handles most of the searches, the pages that follow refer mainly to Google. Focus on improving your rankings in Google. This will yield the best results.
