SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMISATION
The Website Home Page
The
Home page is the most important page in the site and the Search Engines give a lot
of emphasis to the wording on a Home page. The Home page of a website will usually
rank better with a Search Engine than any other page.
Often the Home page of a web site is designed to have the maximum impact on a visitor.
But this is of little value – if there are no visitors. Words, not graphics,
are the key to optimising the Home page for high Search Engine rankings.
Optimising the Home Page
Here are some tips on optimising the Home page of a Website:-
- Search out all of the competitors to see what Keywords and phrases they are using.
Select Keywords that are used frequently by users of the Internet.
- Create a Meta Keywords tag for the Home page. The Meta Keywords tag is helpful in
creating the text of the Home page.
- From the Meta Keywords, select 3 that are frequently used in searches, and describe
the Website in generic terms. Then create phrases that include the selected Keywords.
- Write a Keyword rich Title tag that includes the 3 Keyword phrases. Since the Title
will be displayed by each Search Engine when they show their results, the Title
tag must be attractive to the visitors from a marketing perspective. The Title should
be concise and not more than 65 characters.
- Write a Keyword rich Meta Description tag that describes the Website. Many Search
Engines will display the Meta Description tag when they are displaying the search
results.
- Create the text of the web page using all the Keyword, and repeatedly use the 3
Keyword phrases. Phrases appearing near the top of the page are given greater weighting
by the Search Engines.
- All internal links to pages in the site should also contain the Keyword phrases.
The whole site must reinforce the wording used in the Home page.
